Many cars on the road no longer come with an ashtray, so ash ends up flicked out of the window, dropped into a cup holder or scattered over the door trim and seats. This gives it a proper place: a small, closed tray that sits on the ledge of the driver's door, within easy reach and out of the way.

It fixes with an adhesive base whose curved underside follows the shape of the door ledge. Clean and dry the spot first, press the base down firmly, and give the adhesive time to set before using it. The base stays on the door, and the ashtray body unclips from it when it needs emptying.

The lid slides back to open and slides forward to close, which keeps ash inside when the car goes over a speed breaker and holds in most of the stale smell between uses. Inside, a stainless steel liner takes the heat and wipes clean.

Use it safely. Make sure every cigarette is completely put out before you slide the lid closed, and only empty it once the ash is cold. It is an ashtray, not a bin: do not put tissues, receipts or other paper in it. Adhesive holds best on smooth, hard plastic trim, and may not stick well to leather, fabric or textured surfaces.
